Opportunities for students

The Institute has a very large, and active community of PhD researchers, and graduate students. The community we have built is highly multi-disciplinary spanning science and engineering, health and medicine, and social science. Risk and uncertainty is a fast growing, and very exciting area of research, applicable in almost every field. Our interests span all domains, qualitative and quantitative, fundamental research and industrial application, engineering or social science.

We are committed to training and preparing early career researchers to be the leaders, academics and entrepreneurs of the future.

PhD Studies

There is a range of studentship opportunities available with varying eligibility criteria. A variety of opportunities will be regularly posted on this site, you can also consult the website FindaPhD to identify a wide variety of studentship opportunities at the University of Liverpool.

Currently, there is the following PhD opportuinity: MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Integrated system for rigorous personalised diagnosis for Giant Cell Arteritis

Training events

As part of our commitment to educating early career researchers we have a comprehensive calendar of training events. This includes spring and summer schools in probability, statistics, mathematical methods, data science, and computational methods, as well as many open lectures and scientific meetings and convocations throughout the year.

Our Imprecise Tuesdays, series hosts seminars from our academic staff, PhD researchers, and internationally renowned experts from academia and industry. Imprecise Tuesdays, so imprecise they can happen on any day of the week.

Our annual event, Bayes Days, is a support network for Bayesians and would-be Bayesians offering introductory and specialist tutorials, and a Bayes clinic. Bayes Days is an open forum for anyone to bring along their problems with their Bayesian analyses and seek help in resolving them.

The Risk Institute also hosts Industry Workshops, where scientists and engineers present difficult and interesting problems and we work intensively with them over a two- or three-day period to solve them. These events are free to attend, and open to students and academics form any institution across the United Kingdom. These events allow students to gain an understanding of industrial problem, a chance to collaborate on high-impact research, and a networking opportunity to meet senior engineers and scientists from some of the most high profile companies in Europe.

The Liverpool University Institute for Risk and Uncertainty has become our first port of call for technology research and development in applied statistics and machine learning. The team combines deep scientific knowledge with a can-do approach to delivery, which makes it easy to get things done. We have now completed several projects - including partnerships and consultancy - across various areas of our business where we aim to make better use of data in our live systems.

David Standingford Director, Zenotech

The Risk Institute has pioneered a format for bringing together academics and people from industry, business and NGOs to collaborate on real problems in workshops over one or a few days of intense interaction. It allows interaction without requiring an initial large commitment from industrial partners.

The workshop format provides opportunities for industry to gain access to UK excellence in the fields of uncertainty quantification, risk analysis, mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science. Industrialists present a challenge and work collaboratively over a three day period with academics from the Risk Institute and our partners from across the UK and Europe. This format has proven to be extremely successful proving ground in a number of cases and has led to on-going collaborations.

It is has been a great pleasure to welcome people back to the Liverpool Institute for Risk and Uncertainty for the Second UQ&M Study Group with Industry. This was the second Study Group we have held [here in Liverpool], and we, the organisers, were delighted with the results—three great case studies and, more importantly, new collaborations which can make real impact for all involved.

We believe that this approach works, and, given its growing interest, it has the potential to become a recurring activity in the UK calendar for engineers, statisticians and mathematicians alike.

I became involved with Liverpool risk Institute in late 2015 when I undertook a training program in set theory and Bayesian statistics. From that time on the Institute has supported my companies commercial IT based ventures, including in developing research collaborations.
I found the risk Institute to be approachable, knowledgeable and with the wealth of expertise; academics within the Institute work in close collaboration and have given me sensible and straightforward advice promptly.
